Get out of your head and into our writer's group! The fortress of solitude can blind a writer to the magic of inspiration. Or at least, to the helpful perspective of some fellow writers. In this group we will follow a syllabus of works by various writing teachers to better see our work objectively, and to guide inspiration's hand to our page. We'll begin our focus with Brooke Berman’s Nine Juicy Weeks to a Wonderfully Imperfect First Draft, the Zen Buddhist perspective of Natalie Goldman’s Writing Down the Bones, and Writing From the Senses – an inspired set of exercises by Laura Deutsch. This group is for professional writers, aspiring writers, and those who have yet dared to put word on paper. All genres and perspectives welcome.

When: Every Monday, from 6-8
Where: Front St. Cafe, 1253 N. Front St. - Upstairs!

Wednesday Write Nite

  • Physick House

The only rule to Write Nite is, we write (and it's night!). Whether you're a seasoned scribbler, a dabbler, a novice, or anything in between, we want you here. Write Nite is a community space designed to tap into the creative energy of the group and focus on the actual practice of writing. We'll start with a loose theme and explore that theme individually and collectively, maximizing our time to create, discuss, and share. If there's something you're working on, bring it in. If you're suffering from writer's block or just curious about putting pen to paper, come join us. You'll never leave a Write Nite empty handed.

Theme: TBD

Where: The Head & The Hand Press Writers' Workshop @ Physick House: 321 S. 4th St. (ring bell around the corner on Cypress St.) in the Cincinnati Room, 2nd floor.

Readings by:
* TRACEY LEVINE
* MARYAN CAPTAN
* ADRIANNA BORGIA
* NIC ESPOSITO

http://www.theheadandthehand.com/

Tracey Levine grew up in northeast Philadelphia and teaches creative writing and film courses at Arcadia University where she coordinates the creative writing concentration for undergraduates. She has worked on many documentary projects for WHYY and her creative writing work has appeared in Verbal Seduction, Metropolis VoxPop, Literary Mothers, The Literary Yard, The Halcyon Review, Corner Club Press, Streetlight Mag, Eunoia Press, Crack the Spine, and The Philadelphia City Paper. She currently lives in Philadelphia with her cat and boyfriend. She is a yogi and plays darts in a dart league and is hard at work on a collection of short fiction and a longer thing.

Maryan Captan is an Egyptian-American performance poet who has been working, teaching, and performing in Philadelphia since 2008. Maryan leads experimental poetry workshops and hosts readings at The Head & The Hand Press and serves as Art Director and Event Coordinator for APIARY Magazine.

Adrianna is known for her kick ass meatballs, and she likes to deludes herself with the belief that if she yells at the TV loud enough, the Phillies will hear her in Citizen's Bank Park. She currently works in Center City, editing medical periodicals and arguing with authors about Oxford commas. Her work has appeared in the Rust Belt Rising Almanac and The Corn Belt Almanac.

Nic Esposito is the author of the novel Seeds of Discent and the memoir essay collection Kensington Homestead. Both of these books were inspired by Nic's career as an urban farmer in Philadelphia. He currently is the co-manager of Emerald Street Community Farm with his wife Elisa and he's the founder of The Head & The Hand Press and The Head & The Hand Workshop.

The Letter Apron Club

Tuesday, December 15th at the Physick House, 2nd floor - Cincinnati Room (map)
6:30-8:30 pm

The Letter Apron Club is a three-class series focused on the epistolary form. It takes its name from the 18th century “Leather Apron Club,” a group founded by our very own Ben Franklin, whose purpose was to debate moral, political, and philosophical questions of the times. In this workshop series we will be experimenting with collaboration and alternative approaches to letter-writing. Workshoppers in the Letter Apron Club will create entirely fictionalized, handwritten love and kinship letters, which will ultimately be published in a small zine with the help of a local artist/photographer.

Because this is a three part class, we ask that you purchase the whole package to participate. You can find this in our online store! Dates for the Letter Apron Club are December 1st, December 8th, and December 15th.

Theme: ECONOMY

Where: The Head & The Hand Press Writers' Workshop @ Physick House: 321 S. 4th St. (ring bell around the corner on Cypress St.) in the Cincinnati Room, 2nd floor.

Corn Belt Almanac: A Night of Words and Food

  • Free Library of Philadelphia

Please join The Head & The Hand Press and the Free Library of Philadelphia's Culinary Literacy Center for a night of stories, recipes, cooking, and readings from Corn Belt Almanac. Corn Belt Almanac is a collection of stories, essays, triumphs, and reflections done in the style of an old time almanac about our largest cultural ingredient: FOOD

Featured authors will be contributors Sarah Grey, author of the essay "Friday Night Meatballs," and Jon McGoran, author of the essay "Long Range Meal Planning," who will be reading and cooking from their contributions to the Almanac

Food and literature are the two great pleasures in life and we are pleased to be able to offer both at this special event.

This event is 21+. Tickets are $15 and include a generous tasting and a Yards beer pairing. Copies of Corn Belt Almanac can be purchased at the program.

Special thanks to Yards Brewing Company for sponsoring this event.

Sarah Grey is a freelance writer and editor at Grey Editing LLC in Fishtown, Philadelphia, and the force behind Friday Night Meatballs. Her writing can be found at sarahgreywrites.com.

Jon McGoran is the author of six novels, including the ecological thrillers Drift, Deadout, and their forthcoming sequel, Dust Up. He has been writing about food and sustainability for over 20 years as communications director at Weaver's Way Co-op and Grid Magazine.

MONDAY NIGHT WRITERS' GROUP

Monday, November 9, 2015
6:00 pm-8:00 pm
Physick House (map)

Where: The Head & The Hand Press Writers' Workshop @ Physick House
321 S 4th St. (ring bell around the corner on Cypress St.)
in the Cincinnati Room - 2nd Floor

Cost: This workshop is currently full. Please email info@theheadandthehand.com for wait-list info.
