The Hatchery was created by Tracey Levine and Sean Kearney in conjunction with Head & the Hand Press in an effort to strengthen the presence of the literary scene in Fishtown. We're committed to bringing in the best writers we can year-round, both prominent and up-and-coming, to share their work with you.
A bit about us:
Tracey Levine grew up in northeast Philadelphia and teaches creative writing and film courses at Arcadia University where she coordinates the creative writing concentration for undergraduates. She earned a BFA in screenwriting from University of the Arts, an MA in English from Arcadia University, and a MFA in fiction from Syracuse University. She has worked on many documentary projects for WHYY and her creative writing work has appeared in Verbal Seduction, Metropolis VoxPop, Literary Mothers, The Literary Yard, The Halcyon Review, The Philadelphia City Paper, and has forthcoming work in Streetlight Magazine and The Corner Club Press. She currently lives in Philadelphia with her cat and boyfriend. She is a yogi and plays darts in a dart league and is hard at work on a collection of short fiction and a longer thing, but a poem or two comes out every once in a while.
Sean Kearney is from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, a small coal town outside of Wilkes-Barre. He earned his MFA in poetry from Arcadia University. His work has appeared in Press 1 magazine and has forthcoming work in Deviant Philly. He has also done a series of collaborative work with Philadelphia-based painter John Slaby and Philadelphia-based band Queen Jesus. He currently resides in (you guessed it) Philadelphia.
The Head and the Hand is an independent book publisher and writers’ workshop located in Philadelphia whose goal is to create innovative relationships between authors and the work they produce. They look for writing that shows a connection from the head to the hand and publish stories that have the power to change and entertain.
