Monday Night Writers' Group
Get out of your head and into our writer's group! The fortress of solitude can blind a writer to the magic of inspiration. Or at least, to the helpful perspective of some fellow writers. In this group we will follow a syllabus of works by various writing teachers to better see our work objectively, and to guide inspiration's hand to our page. We'll begin our focus with Brooke Berman’s Nine Juicy Weeks to a Wonderfully Imperfect First Draft, the Zen Buddhist perspective of Natalie Goldman’s Writing Down the Bones, and Writing From the Senses – an inspired set of exercises by Laura Deutsch. This group is for professional writers, aspiring writers, and those who have yet dared to put word on paper. All genres and perspectives welcome.
This class will be accepting new participants until July 13th. If you haven’t signed up by July 13th - you will be able to register again on October 28th.
When: Every Monday, from 6-8 pm
Where: The Head & The Hand Press Writers' Workshop
2012 Sepviva St, Philadelphia, PA 19125
Cost: This workshop is free for workshop members and $6 per class for non-members (click here to purchase)

Farm Fresh Fundraising Dinner with The Head & The Hand Workshop
We invite you to celebrate another great year of The Head & The Hand Workshop. It is our community's support that has allowed us to provide over 50 writers with over a dozen classes per month, opportunities for readings to share their work with the Philadelphia literary community, over 20 hours of editing sessions and most importantly fun events like this dinner to get people from the literary community together and strengthen our bonds. But we need your support so we can continue serving Philly's literary community. To do this, we are bringing together a selection of our fine authors Sarah Grey, Jon McGoran, Nathaniel Popkin, Eric Smith, and Joey Sweeney, as well as dedicated members and friends for a fundraising dinner to support the literary community we build each day and the monthly programming of our Writers' Workshop.
Each ticket includes:
- A cocktail hour in the lovely Physick House Garden from 5-6 plus drinks all night of Literature-inspired cocktails crafted by our friends at Art in the Age and flavored with herbs grown on Emerald Street Community Farm
- The chance to silently bid on a plethora of goods from our good friends in the artist, restaurant and maker communities of Philadelphia
- Intimate, small-table dining from 6-8 with our authors at the Physick House in Old City, as well as literary toasts and self guided tours of the Physick House museum
- A family-style meal prepared by Ben Bigler of the Soup Kitchen Cafe in East Kensington and cooked up with vegetables from Emerald Street Community Farm and meat from Philly Foodworks
- Wacky and wonderful ice cream creations from Little Baby's Ice Cream
We hope to see you there. Can't make it to the dinner, then please consider buying a ticket for a friend who can. And if you don't know anyone who can attend, but would still like to make a contribution, then please use the donation option on the "Get Tickets" page. As always, we appreciate your support.
Thanks to our partners at PhilaLandmarks for use of their lovely Physick House.

Third Omniscient, Head Hopping, Internal Monologues, I/We: let's talk Point-of-View w/ Maryan Captan
In this workshop we'll explore how POV works in fiction and poetry, highlight the nuances between the many approaches, and experiment with writing the same stories from multiple POV's. We'll look at work by David Markson, William Faulkner, and Italo Calvino.
Bring excerpts, questions, and ideas, it's time to tackle POV. And yes, we will be writing in second person.

FLASH! What Genre is Your Work & Does it Matter? w/ Kim Southwick of Gigantic Sequins
What makes your work “flash fiction” rather than “prose poetry”? Or how about what’s the difference between “prose poetry” and “flash non-fiction”? With the advent of the internet, the bookstore model for genre labels is not always relevant to writers. Yet we at Gigantic Sequins still ask you to pick/ a genre label for your work in one way or another. This workshop will focus on musing on what to call your work—but also learning not to worry about it. GS recently held a flash non-fiction and poetry comics contest, two genres that can be widely interpreted. Sometimes the limitation of flash is fun and motivating; other times, it can be discouraging. Learn how to figure out which box to put your work in without feeling boxed in. We’ll be especially focusing on Flash Fiction, as we have a summer contest in Flash Fiction running July-September!
Kimberly Ann Southwick is the founder and editor in chief of the biannual print literary arts journal GIGANTIC SEQUINS. She has two poetry chapbooks, EVERY SONG BY PATSY CLINE (dancing girl press, February 2014) & the forthcoming EFS & VEES (Hyacinth Girl Press, July 2015). She is moving down South this coming August to begin pursuing her PhD in English/Creative Writing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She will greatly miss Philadelphia.
